When choosing a hemorrhoid treatment to get rid of hemorrhoids there are many over-the-counter medications that can treat mild symptoms such as itching and pain. Most of these medications have hydrocortisone or witch hazel as the main ingredient. They come in many forms such as creams, pads, suppositories and ointments. Another form of treatment for hemorrhoids is called a Rubber Band Ligation. It is performed by the physician applying a rubber band around the hemorrhoid thus stopping the blood flow to it, causing the hemorrhoid to dry up and fall off. This type of procedure can be very effective as the hemorrhoid is usually gone within a few days.
Another treatment that must be done by a doctor is called sclerotherapy. An injection of a chemical solution is injected into the hemorrhoid causing it to shrink. There usually is no pain involved but this treatment tends to be less effective than rubber band ligation. Laser or heat is another technique that helps to shrink and harden internal bleeding hemorrhoids with few side effects but hemorrhoids can return with this treatment.
If suffering with large painful hemorrhoids your physician may want to perform a hemorrhoidectomy. This involves removing the hemorrhoid surgically usually under local anesthetic. This treatment is the most effective in removing hemorrhoids but can have side effects. It is always wise to discuss any treatments with your doctor.
